Blog Response #2

Choose a character from your book.  How do you envision this character?  Use your words to describe how this character looks, acts, and behaves.  Also, discuss the impact this character has had on the story up to this point. Would you be friends with this character, or would you avoid him/her?  Why? What role does this character play in your book?  If this character was not in the book, would the book change?  Why or why not??  (Remember to give specific details and a complete blog entry, and don't forget to comment on two other blog entries!  Happy Blogging!)

  1. I chose Dillon as an important character from my book. Dillon is a smart, big, and athletic guy. He is trying to figure out all of the missing pieces of his brothers suicide. He doesn't really know what he wants but he has a crush on Jennifer. To help him cope with the loss of his brother, he starts to write journals to his brother who is no longer here. I think that I would choose to be friends with Dillon because I think he really does have a heart and cares for others. Dillon plays the major role in this book. This book wouldn't be the same if Dillon wasn't in it because it is a lot of him telling the story. He wouldn't be able to write to his brother.

    1. I think that it is really cool that Dillion rights to his brother even though he is not there anymore. Your book seems very interesting and fun to read. I wonder if he will ever figure out the reason for his brothers suicide.

  2. Dillion is a character who is a big, smart and athletic. Dillion is a type of character who has a soft spot by writing to his brother, Preston. Preston committed suicide by shooting himself. Dillion impacts the story because he has a crush on Jennifer. The weird thing about it is, Jennifer used to be a big part of Preston's life and now Dillion is upset because he is jealous Jennifer was Prestons first. Yes, I would be friends with Dillion because he seems like an open ended character. Dillion is the protagonist of the story. I feel like the story would change if Dillion wasn't apart of the story because just everything he does makes the story interesting.

  3. In the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes I choose Virgil Byrnes as my character because I can just picture what he looks like. In the book they described him really well. He had a black hat that was right down to his eyes, black cotton sport coat was tight against is broad shoulders. He had a gray button up shirt under his coat all the way buttoned up, with a dark pair of black baggy pants. One cannot always judge the character by their looks but to me I would be scared of him. Throughout the book they don't really mention Virgil that much. When he comes and visits Sarah it is only for about ten minutes, so he sort of rubs off on me in a bad way like he doesn't care. If he wasn't in the book it wouldn't change too much I don't think because he is not in it that much but I just really pictured this character because of the way they described him in the book.

    2. Your book sounds very interesting, from your description about Virgil I can really picture him. He sounds like he has a role in the story but it is not very big. Hopefully he doesn't scare others too much but that can be his role in the story.

  4. I chose Sarah Byrnes. I envision Sarah to be a lonely, unhappy, and unhealthy teenager that is just trying to fit in with her peers. Sarah has extreme mental and physical scarring on her face and hands from an "accident" when she was little. This resulted in Sarah becoming very mute and catatonic. Sarah has the worst outlook on life and thinks about killing herself. Throughout the book thus far, Sarah has had the biggest impact on the way the story is being played out. I would try and avoid Sarah Byrnes at all costs because she does not seem like a friendly girl that would want to be friends with just anybody. Sarah is the antagonist in the story, she trys to make others feel bad for her and most do not want to listen to her because of the way she treats everyone. If Sarah was not in the book, the book would completely change everything. The whole book revolves around Sarah's troubled past and current life.

  5. In the book Chinese Handcuffs, i chose Dillon as an important character, i picture him as this awkward but tough kid that can be pushed into any situation and still come out as strong as ever. he has had a huge impact on the story because of the things he has been through. if i were to meet this character in my everyday life i feel like i would be friends with him because of his personality. if Dillon wasn't in the story i don't think the story would be any different, because the story jumps around a lot so hes in the story a lot but not all the time.

    1. I absolutely agree that Dillon has a huge impact on the story because he experienced so much things in his life already. I have to disagree with you on the point that the story wouldn't be any different without Dillon. The story is all about Dillon, his past, his present, his relationships and his school life. If Dillon would not be in the story, there would be no one to write letters to Preston or getting in conflicts with the principal regularly. I also agree that Dillon has a very strong personality and he got even stronger over the years because of the various difficulties he had to face in his life (especially the suicide of his brother)

  6. I choose Preston. A skinny scruffy guy with no legs sitting in a wheel chair. Preston has had an impact on the story so far because he kind of messed up Dillion by shooting himself in the head in front of him. I would probably avoid being friends with Preston because he is a drug addict and is not in the right state of mind. Well Preston is no longer in the book any more because he is dead, but if he would have never been in the story from the beginning there wouldn't be all the letters that Dillion wrote in the book.

    1. That sounds like my book in a way, that one character that is not in the book long, but yet they still make an impacts on a few things. That's the same way with Sarah's father, his looks describe the way he is and people saying that he beat sarah up, you can picture it just by his looks.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you. That is how pictured what Preston looked like. The story would be way different if Preston wasn't in it and his death didn't happen because the story revolves around that and Dillon writing to Preston.

    3. I agree with you i wouldn't want to be friends with Preston because you'd always have to be worried about what hes doing or with him always being negative.

  7. I chose Carter Sampson. Carter seems like a very friendly and outgoing person, who could make new friends very easily. In the book it states that Carter is big and strong and fast and smart, and h is also the teams starting quarterback. When Lewis, the main character, runs into some trouble with one of his enemies, Carter is right there defending Lewis and having his back. When Lewis gets kicked off of the team, Carter is right there telling him not to worry about it, and they'll talk about it later. Carter is one of the few people so far in the book that I would want to be friends with, due to the support he has for his friends. If Carter wasn't in the book, I think it could change drastically since Lewis wouldn't have his best friend to support him, defending him, and making sure he stays on the right track. Plus the team would lose their starting quarterback

  8. I am reading “Chinese Handcuffs” and I chose to describe Preston Hemmingway. In my opinion Preston is one of the most important characters in this book, even though he is dead. Chris Crutcher does a good job describing this character so it was easy to envision this character.
Preston is Dillon’s brother. Preston committed suicide, by shooting himself in the head in front of Dillon’s eyes. After Preston got in to a motorcycle accident he lost his legs and was unable to walk, so he had to sit in a wheelchair since that point. The letters that Dillon writes to his dead brother Preston expose that Preston was a drug addict and that he was regularly drinking alcohol, even though he was still in high school. Preston really liked Harley Davidson motorcycles and he really liked Jeninifer. I think without Preston’s character the book would not have been written or it would least be a lot different. Because Preston is involved in pretty bad activities like drinking and taking drugs I would avoid him.
Even though Preston is dead, the book still has a lot of flashbacks to the past, like Preston’s childhood and the time when he committed suicide. So those flashbacks tell you more about his past and the reasons why he killed himself. Preston is definitely a really important character for the book.

  9. I chose Dillon as the character, Dillon seems to be a smart and fun loving kid. Dillon is a pretty tough kid except when you bring up the death of his brother, Preston. Dillon has an impact on the book because of his huge crush on Jennifer. I would defiantly be friends with Dillon because like I said he seems to have a lot of fun especially when they killed the cat. Dillon is the main character in the book. I think that the book would defiantly change without Dillon in the book because he is the main character and he tells the story about his brother

I chose Boomer Cowans. I envision Boomer as a huge brick house that has no feelings and likes to pick on the main character. Boomer is the halfback for the football team and is huge and strong and is unstoppable. Boomer is not affraid of anyone on the football team. Boomer is starting to get to be an ass now. Boomer made a cheap shot the appoint that was black and hurt the poor guy. Also Boomer didn't even called for it so unfair. I would avoid Boomer because he is such an ass. Yes the book would change if Boomer was not in the book.

  13. I chose Preston, and I envision him as a small kid in a wheelchair. He was bigger until he became paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, and since then he has been a crazy drug addict. The book would not be the same without him because part of it is Dillon writing a letter to him. Preston changed Dillon's life because he killed himself in front of Dillon and blamed it on Dillon. Without Preston there would be no story because the book is about Dillon dealing with his death.

  14. I chose Boomer from Running Loose. I envision Boomer as a strong, built kid that thinks he is better than everyone else. He will beat people up if they make fun of him or do not agree with what he does. Most kids are afraid of him because of this so they all act like they are his friend to stay on his good side. Louie, the main character, has had some go arounds with him. Boomer attacked and injured the star player on the opposing football team, so Louie took a stand and told him that was a dirty play. In result, Boomer tries to harm Louie. I would not be friends with Boomer because he is such a bully. Just because he is a good football player does not give him a reason to beat people up. Yes the book would change if he was not part of it because there would be less drama and Louie would still be playing sports.

  17. I chose to write about Becky in Running Loose. Becky is a cheerleader and the main character, Louis's girlfriend. Becky is very popular and the prettiest girl in the school, and everyone is surprised she chose Loui as her boyfriend when she could have anybody in the school. I envision her to be skinny, with long brown how like they said. She seems like an extremely nice girl and does what she thinks is right and does not care about everybody else opinion. The impact Becky has is she is always there for Loui when he needs somebody. She is always supporting his opinions and making him feel better. I think I would definitely be friends with Becky because she is extremely kind, and seems like a good friend to have. If Becky was not in this book the book would be changed a lot. 18. In Running Loose, I think Carter Sampson is the guy that everyone wants to be like. People look up to Carter because he is very smart, he is one of the fastest guys on the football team, and he is tall. Carter works out twice a day all year long to keep in shape for football. And he is quarterback, to me it seems like he has got it all. His impact on the story so far, is that he keeps everything in line with Boomer and Louie. I would want to be friends with him because he is nice to everyone and very athletic. His role is Louie's best friend. The book would change because there would be no one to keep Boomer from beating up Louie.

  19. I chose Preston Hemmingway. I picture Preston as a scrawny, but somewhat tall guy. Chris Crutcher described in the book that Preston is really into doing drugs and he really likes Harley Davidson, and tries so hard to fit in with the biker gang. It was also described that Preston gets around in a wheelchair because he lost his legs in a motorcycle accident. Preston plays a big role in the story because all of the letters Dillon writes are written to Preston about the memories they shared, and he retells stories. I do not think the story would be the same without Preston because a lot of the plot revolves around him and he is a main character even though he is not alive anymore.

Carter always tries to make sure that the right things are done but if needed he will get in the way to protect his friends and family. Carter makes a big impact on all of the people he comes in contact with. Carter will make sure that the other character know where stand and make sure they don't overstep there line. I would want to be friends with Carter he seems like a very good person that would stand up for me. Carter plays the role of the quarterback for the football team and also the peace maker between some of the characters that can' handle each other. 21. If I where to imagine a character in my book I would imagine Lion. Lion is in my opinion the most interesting character in Stotan. The book described Lion as a real big guy with blonde hair. Lion is the guy that goes head first into everything. For example he started a fire in a trash with pamphlets that had some racial things printed on it. Take in mind this was in the middle of the school day. He was destroying the pamphlets in the most direct way possible and caused quite a scene. without Lion in the story the book would lose a lot of plot and I do believe the book wouldn't be as good as it is with him in it.

Her grandpa was the only one who really looked out for her and then he died right in front of her. 26. One of the characters in the book I'm reading is the title character, Sarah Byrnes. With how the main character, Eric Calhoune, describes her, Sarah Byrnes is a not person to look at, but a person to know. Due to her unfortunate accident when she knocked over a boiling pot of spaghetti onto herself, her face and her body were severely burned. For personal issues, her father never paid for treatment, so, to the current date, she is completely covered in deep scars. From that, her behavior is very strong. She always stands up to the problems that comes to her, and encourages others to do the same. It should be known that Sarah Byrnes impacts a great deal in this book. The book is about Eric going through life in middle and high school. During that time, especially when he's facing troubles, he is always supported by Sarah Byrnes. Eric does the same when he, often, visits her in the hospital's psychiatric ward. If Sarah Byrnes' character was removed from this story, then there will be no story. Eric's character would, most definitely, change because of how he and Sarah Byrnes are best friends. Also, that Eric is staying fat for her so they would still relate to each other by having their faults. I would, most likely, be friends with Sarah Byrnes because of how she's not a bully and that she encourages others to face their situations, like hers.

  27. Lednecky, I envision him as a tall, big, thirty-year old man with dark brown eyes that intimidate anyone who approaches him, who also has a huge attraction for football. He likes to win and wont take a loss. Lednecky seems determined by his passion and will do anything to win. Lednecky has had a bigger impact on the story compared to the rest of the characters. Lednecky had approached his football players in one of their meetings to discuss about a transfer from California, Washington, playing for Salmon River. He had convinced his players to play dirty football or at least most of them. I would avoid becoming friends with someone like Lednecky because he seems to have little or no remorse for his actions and words. Lednecky gives not only bad advice to his team but a bad role model. Lednecky plays the bad role model type coach. If Lednecky was not in the book, it would change the rising action part of the book.

Preston has had a big impact Dillon after he killed himself right in front of him. I would not want to be anywhere near Preston because of all the dangerous activities he has taken part of and because of his drug and alcohol use. He doesnt really act like a tough man he is also kind of a jerk because he is falling for another girl and hangs out with her instaed of his actual girlfriend who really loves him. He is the main character and if i was in the book i would not be friends with him because he is a jerk who doesnt really care about peoples feelings.

  31. i chose Nortie from Stotan!. I see him as a really built person because people that swim are in really good shape. he is a very shy person and gets worked up very easy. He is important to the story because he is the best swimmer on the team. I would not talk to him because i do not talk to shy people. the book would be different if he wasnt in it because he is the best swimmer on the team.

    1. I've never seen a really built person, but as you describe him this must be a very interesting character in you book. Keep me informed.

  33. i choose Dillon because i feel he is very important. He has been through quite a bit but he still stays strong and moves on with his life. i also feel like after watching his brother kill himself he might have realized a few things about life and what he is doing in his life. he is a very strong and caring character even though most people dont see him as that.

  34. Jenifer is the character i choose to write about for this situation. This character is one of them students that get good grades in every class and still manages to excel in her after school sport. She has a pretty big impact in this story up to this point being one of the best basketball players on the team or in the school all together. If Jenifer wouldn't take role in this book it may be changed a lot because the book focuses on her and her family a lot.

  35. In Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes , i envision Sarah being like big and very shy. Will not talk unless shes spoken too. Only stays to herself. Also very smart and i feel like at times she wants to be happy but cant because of her past.
