Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

Comments

  1. Malala is the main character in my book. She has to go through a lot of difficult situations through out her childhood. Malala has to stand up for herself by fighting for her education. She goes through the pain of being shot and still is able to fight for herself. If i was Malala it would be very hard for me to stand up for myself because you would have to be very brave. I would want to do something about it though because it isn't fair for women to have no education.

    1. That is very sad to hear that Malala had to fight for her right to education, then being strong enough to get shot in the face and make it out alive. Malala is a very stong character.

    2. I agree that Malala has a very strong and brave character. Fighting for education only being a teenager is super impressive. I also would not be able to stand up for myself in this struggle. I just would not be brave enough to do that. That's why I think so many people look up to Malala and her inspirational and brave story.

    3. I have felt awful about how the women are treated in this book since the very beginning but I am very impressed with how brave Malala is for standing up for the women in her home country.

    4. I agree with you Ashley. It would be hard for fighting for her education because that would be hard to do. Also the fact that she was shot in the face would be a difficult situation to deal with.

    5. I agree that Malala does face many difficult challenges at such a young age. She does not let any of it get her down though. I also can't believe that she just doesn't give up because everyone doubts her and does not believe in her.

    7. I agree with you Ashley, Malala is very brave. I would also not have enough bravery to stand up for myself in a situation where you are risking death at any minute. Education is very important though.

  2. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the character, Laila, faces a lot of hardships and struggles. It all begins when there house gets hit by a rocket and causes her to be very injured. She is then taken into Mariam and Rasheed house to recover. When she was recovered, she would have to help Mariam clean the house, cook meals and anything else. I honestly wouldnt know if I would of handled the situation the same way she did. She was in rough condition and managed to pull through.

    1. I agree, Laila did face alot of hardships with her entire family dying in the matter of a couple years. Laila also got extremely hurt when the rocket exploded on the house. I do not think I could do what Laila deals with as well.

      Delete
    2. I agreed with this too, because I think Laila lost a lot in a very short amount of time. She lost her brothers, friends, family, and Tariq moved away with his parents. She is pretty much all alone now. Just like Mariam was toward the beginning of the book when her mom killed herself and her dad made her marry Rasheed and sent her away. She lost everyone just like Laila.

    3. Wow! This book sounds very interesting. I feel like all of the books we are reading have to deal with a lot of struggles and hardships. They all have to fight for what is right and get through it.

    4. I am also reading this book and wrote about Laila too. I wrote mostly about everything that has happened to her before she got hurt, but after she got hurt is also a terrible experience as well. Laila is a very strong girl and I do not know how she deals with all of it because I know I could not.

      Delete
    5. i agree 100% , Laila went through the most if you ask me. Taking care of kids all the time. Getting abused from Rasheed mentally and physically. She is a very strong women.

  3. I am reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and I view Mariam's challenges as very difficult because she has to deal with Rasheed everyday. From cleaning the entire house, and cooking for him when he constantly puts her down and says her cooking is no good. Mariam handles hardship very well however, she powers through everything to make Rasheed happy. If i was in Mariam's shoes i would not handle it as well as she does. Rasheed took Laila off the street and married her after Mariam said no. I could not handle the situations Mariam faces as well as she does. If i were Mariam i would leave Rasheed and tell him that Laila can be his new maid.

    1. I notice similarities between Mariam's and Malala's struggles. They both have to deal with the role of the woman in the household of being responsible for cooking and cleaning. Even through all those struggles they have to face, they are still strong. Both of the stories are inspirational, especially for women.

      Delete
    2. I am reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and i agree with you. I also think Mariam does everything to make Rasheed happy, and she handles his attitude well by not letting it get to her. I would not be able to handle Rasheed's temper and all the things he makes Mariam do.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you Miranda. I don't know how Mariam can still deal with Rasheed after everything he does to her and how he treats her. I also agree with you that if I was Mariam I would leave Rasheed because he is practically forgot about Mariam unless he needs something or he is mad at Laila.

      Delete
    4. I also agree with you Miranda. I would not be able to deal with Rasheed if I got treated like that. I am also reading this book and I wrote about Laila but I think they are both is extremely rough situations right now and I would not know what to do in either.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you on your point of view on Mariam and how her life is rough. She had a rough childhood with them being poor, her mom killing herself, and then her dad giving her up and not wanting her. Now she is married to a guy who doesn't appreciate her and everything she does. But, she does not say anything or complain about her life she just keeps going on.

    6. i totally agree Rasheed is such a bad person and i couldnt standing being treated the way he is treating Mariam.

  4. I am reading "I am Malala". The main protagonist Malala Yousafzai has to deal with so many different challenge through out the book. I was really impressed with Malala's story and how she faced all of the challenges . I think that the biggest challenge, and also the challenge that Malala is most passionate about is he fight for education for girl in Pakistan. Since Malala was a little girl, education was a huge part of her life. Her fight for education took a unexpected, cruel turn when Malala got shot in the head by the Taliban. But I think this incident made her even stronger in the fight for education in her home country. Another big struggle Malala has to deal with is the fact that she grew up in a country where women have basically no rights and were forced to stay at home and take care of children and the household. But Malala had always had a strong character. She was lucky to grow up in a more liberal family, because her father always made sure that she was treated well and making the best out of the situation. The fact that her father owned a school in Pakistan changed a lot in Malala's fight for education for girl. She was able to attend school since she was only a few years old.The last problem is that she wants to go back. One big struggle Malala is dealing with right now is that, Malala and her family are living in England. She enjoys her new freedoms and living in a peaceful enviroment, but being away from home and the rest of her family is really hard for Malala. That's why she hopes to go back home to Pakistan in the future.
In my opinion I think Malala has a very strong and brave character.I would have not been brave enough to fight publicly for education for girls in a country where the Taliban and the corrupt government have all the power. If I were in Malala's situation I would have probably given up by the time the Taliban attack happend.
I look up to Malala. I think she is a great inspiration.

  5. In the book Night, Elie has to go through many struggles such as being stripped away from his mother and sisters, and being forced to leave his home and go to a concentration camp. After they reach the concentration camps, they are forced to work all day, while surviving on very little food and rest, aside from being beaten and whipped for no real reason. He doesnt really have a choice on how to handle it other than keep doing what hes doing and hope that he doesnt get punished any further. I would just try to stay low on the radar and dont make myself stand out, to avoid any punishments. Other than that he doesnt have much of a choice on what to do

  6. Eliezer has many challenges throughout the book from trying to avoid going to the crematorium to trying to stay alive with very little food and water. 8. The main character of Night is Elie Wiesel. The most of the challenges that he goes through are, mainly, life threatening. The main challenge is trying to survive in the Auschwitz concentration camp. In there, the struggles are trying to stay away from trouble from anybody, especially the guards. The way that Elie handles the problems he faces is a little hard to explain. When it comes to problems, Elie knows if he is or is not able to avoid them. Some of the solutions of his problems were just made of luck. For example, when Elie and his father were almost thrown into the crematory, but were ordered to leave before they were going to step into the fire pit. If I was in his shoes, I would do my very best to say away from trouble, but I probably wouldn't survive that very long in that way. I would have been very afraid because during that time, there may not be a tomorrow. However, I wouldn't kill myself because I wouldn't want to lose my life over actions made by a madman.

He is being chased by the rebels that want to kill the kids and there parents, or train them to be a rebel. He has had many challenges since the war started because he has had to run away from rebels shooting at him several times, and every village he goes to he ends up leaving because the rebels attack. He has lost several family and friends throughout the book, and has been separated from his family. He never has time to grieve because he is always trying to flee from rebels. In A Long Way Gone, war has impacted him in the most brutal way possible. With the disappearance of his family and not knowing their location. Later Ishmael runs away from Kamator without his brother, Junior. Leaving everything and everyone behind. Ishmael became afraid to think. He describes the natural beauty and family memories to provide a counterpoint to the violence and inhumanity he experiences. 18. In my book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns." One of the main characters is Laila, she has been going through a lot lately. First her brothers die in war, then her best friend gets hit by a stray rocket and it blows her to pieces. After that, Tariq moved away with his parents and wanted to marry Laila before they left. That way Laila could go with him and his family, but she did not marry him since she could not leave her family. Then Laila's parents died because their house was hit when they were inside. While Laila was outside putting things in the car getting ready to go. The explosion sent Laila flying but she survived and is now recovering at Rasheed and Mariam's house. There is no way I would be able to handle all of the things that Laila had. I would probably freak out and leave town to go find Tariq, because it can't get any worse than it already is.

Girls in her country have always been treated a lot differently than guys even before the taliban came to Malala’s village. After the taliban came situations for her became worse. They started blowing up girls schools and any day Malala’s school could be next. If i was in her situation I honestly do not know what I would do. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night I would also feel really sick being in school because it could get blown up at any moment. 3. I agree! I would hate having to go to school knowing it could get blown up. it would be the worst thing ever though not knowing if your school was blown up and having to wait until you get to school to even see if you still have the school there. i would be scared though because in one of the chapters a man that malala works with just got shot one day randomly, i would be scared that the Taliban would decide to blow the school up with all the girls on it or if they would come in and start shooting the girls.

Her hometown is currently being attacked by the Taliban and no one can do anything about it. She continues to fight for women's education to not be taken away because she feels it is very important just like her father. I respect Malala for doing this and not being afraid to stand up for herself and others. With everything that is going on in her village, I would choose to run away and get out of there before anymore people get killed. Many of them cannot even go out in public with their face showing because the husbands find that disrespectful. They just have to stay home clean, cook, and do the dirty work. Also in my book there is a war going on and fights in the government. The war is right by their town so parts of it are being hit with bombs. But, the women in the story do not complain about anything, they just take it all in.

Elie Wiesel, the main character and author of Night is faced with the struggles of living in the concentration camp during WWII and Elie quickly adapts to the environment to the best of his ability but is still thrown around and beat on the daily. I think the worst thing Elie has had to suffer from thus far is being dragged away from his mother and sister but is still with is father, but his father is having a hard time fitting in and is always making mistakes. If I was Elie, i would be kind of like him and just stay down and not stand out, but their were a couple times when Elie could have stood up for himself, but didn't.

  30. In my book there are a few main characters and two of their names are Mariam and Laila. They are both younger women in this time period. The women face a lot of troubles in their love lives especially. Mariam never got to pick who she was married too, her dad and his wives found someone and they made them get married. Laila actually liked a man but after he passed away due to the war going on she got put with a man who helped her get back on her feet. She ended up feeling like she had to marry that man. Mariam and Laila are now both married to the same man and the same thing is expected out of both of them. Neither of them went or finished school, so now they just have to stay home cook and clean. Also if they get pregnant they are the ones who stay home and take care of the kids. Their husband now tells them what to do and how to do it, the women in this time and place do not have much of a say in anything.

At first it started with her 2 brothers dying in the war. Laila's mom was more upset about their death than she was but it still hurt her a lot. Then Lailas best friend told her that he was moving away and that made her extremely sad, especially because he was her only friend. He asked her to marry him thinking they could move away together but she had to say no because she could not leave her family. Then her house got blown up with her parents in it so they passed away as well. After that she was a mess and did not know how to go about the rest of her life. As she was packing her car up with stuff an explosion happened and Laila went flying. She got injured but she luckily survived. Now she is at her neighbors house Rasheed and Mariens recovering and doing things for Rasheed. I would not be able to take all of these horrible things at one time. I do not think I would ever be happy again without my parents or my best friend with me anymore. I would take it day by day and hope it would get better.

  34. I am reading I am Malala. In my book Malala faces many problems. She is trying to stand up for her education and gets shot in the face. Malala's family also goes through many hardships involved with the taliban's attacking her home town Swat. This is not fair because no one can really do anything about the taliban's but listen to what they say or they are likely to get killed. I would probably like hide and run away if i was Malala because i dont think i could live through this. Malala s a very brave girl and i give her alot of credit for sticking up for herself.
